Overview

While contracting with Atomic, a company known for producing high-tech global events, I was tasked with creating motion graphic deliverables for Avalara Next “The Premiere Tax-Tech Developer Event.” Avalara, a global SaaS provider of cloud-native tax compliance solutions, needed branded motion graphics to support the live streamed event, which offered hands-on technical training for audiences ranging from small businesses to Fortune 500 companies.

I collaborated daily with Atomic’s production team and Avalara’s event coordinator and project manager to ensure timely delivery of high-quality design assets. Deliverables included a 5–10 second intro and outro animation, a full-screen wipe transition, a 10–30 second looped motion background, and a 5–10 second lower-third animation, all aligned with the event’s branding and technical requirements.

During the animation process, I mapped out the timing of each letter’s movement and applied effects to create dynamic transitions. I used masking techniques to control motion and create smooth entrances and reversals. To enhance visual interest, I utilized the ribbon stylization of the title and incorporated background graphic assets, creating a layered and engaging sense of motion. A simple, unobtrusive background was chosen to keep the viewer’s focus on the animated elements.

The objective of the screen wipe was to ensure full-screen coverage for at least 5 frames while maintaining a quick, dynamic movement. The main challenge was syncing all layers to achieve complete coverage simultaneously. To accomplish this, I used overlapping ribbon elements and branded graphic assets, creating a smooth and visually engaging full-screen transition.

While animating the background, I created layered movements for three large triangle assets, scaling them from smallest to largest. A key challenge arose with overlapping layers, as their semi-transparent opacities caused the color vibrancy to darken. To resolve this, I ran multiple tests using masking and solid gradients. After consulting with a teammate at Atomic, we decided to pivot to a dark blue gradient. This solution maintained subtle transitions while preserving the intended vibrancy and overall design integrity.

Due to time constraints, I negotiated Avalara’s initial request for two motion options down to one refined version. The main challenge was creating dynamic, engaging animations that supported rather than distracted from the content. I used dot stylization to add depth to the background and employed a screen wipe to seamlessly reveal the speaker’s name and title, aligning with the event’s overall visual theme.
